While Dell is a wonderful company, and has cheap starter computers, configure machines from them with the power that you are probably looking for is expensive.

Building the computer can also get expensive, as buying the individual parts can add up very quickly.

If you are using the computer for gaming, a good place to pick up a PC would be alienware.com, extreme quality with extreme performance. But if you just want a good computer on the cheap, I would try a small local shop, nanosys1.com, tigerdirect.com, or any of the myriad of other low-cost shops out there. You can even price shop for PC's on sites like cnet.com and bizrate.com if you know what you're looking for.

Another option, would be to purchase a "barebones" kit, which is a downgraded PC (usually a case, motherboard, and a few essential components), and then purchase components (like video, audio, etc.) separately. This option is good for students people with limited funds, as you can usually purchase a runnable machine for about $200, then add to it as time and money allows.

HP's are good computers for a decent price. Don't go through Dell. I have a dell laptop and a dell desktop and I've had nothing but problems with both of them. It is ridiculous. But, if you visit www.hp.com there are tons and tons of desktops and laptops to choose from, where you can build it yourself or buy one that is already built. Apples are also great computers if you are into doing lots of video editing, music stuff, etc. They also don't get viruses as often as other computers. They are on the expensive side though. Email me at michellejanick@yahoo.com if you really need help. I know lots about computers and so does my brother. I can help ya out!

Well...cheap is not always the best way to go. How many times have you seen an E-Machine sitting in the garbage because it just dies? I agree with everyone else, building it yourself is the best way to go. Its not necessarily the cheapest, but you get to choose the components that go into your PC. You dont have to settle for the cheapest, no-name brand, components that the big manufacturers offer.

To give you an example, I recently built a cube pc and I spent around $600 in parts. But I have an ASUS MoBo, 1G Corsair RAM, 160G HD and an AMD Athlon 64 3200. And it runs like a dream!

Feel free to contact me if you need some suggestions!

The cheapest and best set-ups are those you build yourself. Pickup a PC magazine or two, and you are bound to find some DIY section. Since there will be no warranty, you should learn as much as you can before buying the parts you want, and consult your computer-literate peers regarding compatibility issues on your choices.

Good luck!

tigerdirect.com usually has really good deals. Way better than dell,hp, newegg, circuit city, best buy, walmart and ebay. I know I just bought 1 and shopped around for a couple weeks to check pricing changes(sales/rebates.) Just to let you know I got a AMD 64 +3200, 512 ddr, 160 GB hd, and dvd burner for $300(w/o monitor.)

It really depends where you are located. Get a second hand computer coz it's gonna be cheap. It's up to you to increase its storage and speed.
