In the 1960s and beyond, it satirized such burgeoning topics as the sexual revolution, hippies, psychoanalysis, gun control, pollution, the Vietnam War, and drug abuse. The magazine gave equal time, generally negative, to counterculture drugs such as cannabis as well as taking a savage approach towards mainstream drugs such as tobacco and alcohol. Yep, they were on drugs.

I think it's best answered in an interview I saw about 20 years ago with the original editor-in-chief, William M. Gaines. He said something to the effect of the following:
"MAD Magazine never told you it was cool to do drugs or drink or smoke... MAD told you it was *stupid* to do them."
Hate to sound like a cranky oldster, but I think the magazine has taken a downturn... the humor is much more bitter and biting these days than back in the 70's and 80's when I was reading it every month. (I also have a collection of about 20 of the paperbacks that were reprints of 60's issues). The old MAD was sheer brilliance, and I truly believe it actually improved my reading skills as a child (I'm an English teacher now). I can recall learning a great deal of higher-level vocabulary from reading MAD magazine - for example, I was the only kid in my 5th grade class who knew what the word "obsession" meant, because of my exposure to the word in the pages of MAD (probably through their send-up of the movie with the same title, that they called "Sob-session.")
BTW, try to find the MAD CD-ROM set on eBay... every issue, every article, from the very first issue up to 1998. Excellent resource, and fun for nostalgia.

IMHO, those guys were naturally gifted as satirical writers and cartoonists. I suppose there may have been a chance that they were involved in illicit drug use, but I doubt that they could have consisitantly produced their material while affected by hallucinogens.

great question, young people may not know how important MAD was to us back in the 60s it was the venue for the nerd nonconformist. a nephew left me a copy not long ago and it still makes me laugh, I hope they publish MAD forever.
