OK, without know *lots* more, this is almost impossible to answer, sorry. Like, where do you live, was the whole head red or just parts of it, the whole chest or just parts, where were the spots, etc.

However, check the link below, and see what you can find out. I've left it with one woodpecker up and you can use the links there to look at other woodpeckers to see if you can find it. Also, try sapsuckers and flickers -- they are close relatives and are often mistaken for woodpeckers!
