That hasn't been announced yet. The candidates must announce that they are running for office first, then there is a primary election and then the main election. The announcments are expected soon.

This will of course, be quite interesting, as Dick Cheney certainly will not be running. Despite rumors about Bush trying to get an amendment passed allowing him to seek a third term, it just won't happen; especially if as expected, the Democrats make big gains in the mid-term elections. Here is a run down of the likely candidates, even though nobody has really officially announced:

Democrats:

Sen. Joe Biden (DE) (all but official)
Al Gore (could be a real possibility, based on popularity of film)
John Kerry (much talk of him trying again)
Hillary Clinton (will likely run, as expected)
Sen. Chris Dodd (CT)
John Edwards (forget VP, he still wants the big job)
Gov. Mark Warner (Virginia)
Gov. Tom Vilsack (Iowa)
Gov. Bill Richardson (NM)
Gov.
Sen. Barack Obama (IL) probably a bit too early for him
Senator Evan Bayh (IN)
Senator Dick Durbin (IL)
Governor Ed Rendell (PA)
Former Senator Tom Daschle (SD)
Al Sharpton (may make his typical dramatic appearance)
Dennis Kucinich
Howard Dean (he's party chair and vowed not to run)
Former Gen. Wesley Clark

Republicans:

John McCain (AZ) easily the proverbial front-runner
Bill Frist (TN)
Senator George Allen (VA)
Senator Andrew Lamar Alexander (TN
Gov. Jeb Bush (FL) at this point, I think we're pretty bushed.
Condoleeza Rice (I doubt she'd actually run, despite rumors)
Gov. Mitt Romney (MA)
Gov. Janet Napolitano (AZ)
Sen. Elizabeth Dole (NC) possible, but she is getting older - how about another Dole-Clinton showdown?
Sen. Norm Coleman (MN)
Former Gov. Tom Ridge (PA)
Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (NY)
Governor George Pataki (NY)
Bill Weld, former MA governor - actually running for NY governor now.
Gov. Schwarzenegger (won't happen - won't have amendment)
Sen. Joe Lieberman (CT) just kidding...though who knows, if he loses the Senate race, he could become the Republican everyone knows him to be.
