The Romeos - I know that you was saying, wasn't it Billy Paul but you did ask for the Original Singer. The Romeos was a group consisting of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff - two of the three writers of the song. The third writer was Cary Gilbert.
Other songs written by Gamble and Huff - known as the Philly Sound were:
I'm gonna make you love me - The Supremes (yes I know the Supremes were from Detroit.
Expressway to your heart - Soul Survivors
Tighten Up - Archie Bell and the Drells (The Romeos were the Drells)
Only the strong survive - Jerry Bulter and later Elvis Presley
Back Stabber - The O'jays
If you don't know me by now - Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes
You'll never find - another love like mine - Lou Rawls.
TSOP - (The Sound of Philly) by MFSB (Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers) The Romeos were MFSB.
Gamble and Huff had 33 top ten R&B songs
