My old hair stylist called me up and asked me to do her a favor. She wanted me to be part of a model shoot that would showcase her makeup and hair skills. She asked me to stop by a few days before to look at my hair and did a few things for free, since I was doing her a favor.

Would you have at least left her a tip? I wasn't sure. She did ask me to do her a favor, and I am not getting paid at all for the shoot or my time. I feel sort of bad though. What would you do or have done?

The only thing she did was add a shine mask and blow dry it.

No, you were bartering one service for another, a quid pro quo. She styled your hair and you are modeling the results. Now, if she was the owner of the salon and had delegated someone else to service you, then you should tip that third person.

Think of it this way, if you loaned your car to someone to use for the weekend and they washed and waxed it to make it look spiffy to impress their date, would you tip them for it?

Personally I would have left a tip. That's just the way I am. Chances are your stylist won't be pissed at not getting at tip because you are doing her a favour. So don't worry too much about it. If it's really bothering you, just come right out and ask her if she wanted a tip- you could play it off like you forgot and you "feel so bad!"

Giver her a tip ONLY if you want to avoid these sort of favors in future.....If you like working free for her, you should not leave any tip BUT if you are in a situation that "Oh say her no to her......" Make sure to leave tip so she would stop asking your free service in future !!

I would not tip for that service. Perhaps if she had colored your hair, then yes. Your being kind enough to act as a model for her model shoot is plenty gratitude in this case and I'm sure she appreciates it.

Nah, I don't think a tip was necessary. You WERE, as you said, doing her a favor, and wouldn't even be there if it were not for that reason. Don't worry about it.

I wouldn't feel too bad about it. I might have left a tip if she, say, permed or colored it and you really liked it. But like you said it was for her benefit and she asked you to do it.

It is always appropriate to tip when you hair is done, then it is her option to accept or refuse.
