The final match started with each side scoring within the first 20 minutes. Zinedine Zidane opened the scoring with a controversial penalty, and Marco Materazzi levelled the scores from an Andrea Pirlo corner. Both teams had chances to score a winning goal: Luca Toni hit the crossbar for Italy; an Italian goal was disallowed for an offside; France was not granted a second penalty in the 53rd minute when Florent Malouda was taken down in the box.

After the regulation 90 minutes, the score was level at 1-1, forcing extra time to be played. Italian keeper Gianluigi Buffon made a potentially game saving stop in extra time when he pushed a Zidane header over the crossbar. The extra time proved goalless and a penalty shootout followed, which Italy won 5-3. It was the first all-European final since Italy won the 1982 FIFA World Cup, and the second final (1994 was first, again with Italy involved) to be decided on penalties.

Another memorable moment of the match was Zidane's angry reaction to comments made by Italian defender Marco Materazzi. Near the end of extra time, Zidane headbutted Materazzi in the chest in an off-the-ball incident. Referee Horacio Elizondo did not see the confrontation, but sent Zidane off based on the intervention of the fourth official Luis Medina Cantalejo. Materazzi's exact words are not publicly known. Zidane alleged they were insults to his family, and FIFA concluded they were not of a racist nature. Both players received fines and suspensions for their actions.

Evenly matched first round, plenty of attacking football. French scored early with a Zidane penalty, and Italians equalised a little later with a Materazzi goal.
Half-time score: 1-1
Second half starts, French still on the attack, Italians slip back into atypical 'ham chee' Italian defensive style, seemingly aiming for a penalty shootout right from the start.
Full-time: 1-1
In extra time, the situation is exactly the same as the second half. With 21 of 30 minutes of extra time played, Zidane walks away from Materazzi, but turns around and headbutts Materazzi in the chest, sending him sprawling to the ground (post-match, it is revealed Materazzi verbally abused Zidane throughout the match). Many tense minutes pass before the referee red-cards Zidane, leading to speculation that one of the linesman saw the video replay before informing the referee of Zidane's act.
End of extra time: 1-1, France one man down. By this time, France had already lost Patrick Viera (from a tackle in the first half), Thierry Henry (sub by coach for Trezeguet just before extra time ends) and Zinedine Zidane.
Penalty shoot-out: Trezeguet misses the second penalty for France, while Italians score all 5 penalties. Italy wins Fifa World Cup 5-3 on penalties.

The game was pretty much a snoozefest and the game went to overtime where it remained a snoozefest until about 9 minutes left when Zidane, a french player, headbutted an Italian player in the chest and received a red card. But then snoozing continued. So they went to penalty kicks, which Italy won.

heres what i know-
zidane captained france, cannavaro captained italy,
france went 1 up trough a zidane penalty early on and matterazi equalized with a header leaving it 1-1 at full time.
with no goals in extra time, penalties beckoned.
oh yeah, zidane got shown the red card for headbutting marco materazzi after an alleged insult reffering to zinadines family.
on to penalties....
trezeguet missed his one and up stepped grosso with the vital spot kick to earn the italians thier fourth world cup win.

Italy beat France for penalties. in the 90 minutes, they draw 1 -1
ZiZu did the goal for France, it was a penaltie, which he kicked very soft, Buffon couldn't believed, Italy made his goal with a great hit of head of Matterrazzi.
In the penalties all was very even, but Trezzeguet missed his penaltie, he kicked very Strong, his shoot hit in the head of the"porteria".
PD: Zizu gave Matterrazzi a blow with his head in the chest, missing 3 minutes to end the game
PD: Matterrazzi said bad things about Zizu s mother and sister
