i have just signed up to voipcheap (kind of like skype and tesco internet phone but all landline calls are free) the catch is it's not compatible with USB phones or headsets.

It says to plug in a mic to get going straight away or buy a headset but where would you plug in the headset? could I use my mobile phones hands-free kit until I buy a headset?

For a microphone separate from your speakers, just plug into the port with the microphone mark. Make sure your speakers are attached.

For the headset with the microphone, you're going to have to unplug your speakers and put the corresponding plug into where the speaker was and the other plug into where the microphone should be.

just try out all combinations if you can't tell but you will get there!

Speakers go in the green 1/4" connection on the back of the PC. The microphone goes into the pink/red connection.

most sound cards have a mic input.... It is the card that your speakers are plugged into.
You can pick up headsets for about £5 in most electrical stores but this does mean unplugging you speakers or you can do what I did and by a switch...... Up to you

Most modern PCs have a jack input for a mic. It is usually colour coded. If it's a laptop it is normally on the side or hidden by a sliding flap.

The headsets normally have two connectors, one lead plugs into the MIC socket, the other into the HEADPHONE or SPEAKER socket. The MIC socket is sometimes coloured pink. The HEADPHONE socket is usually blue, and the SPEAKER green

You can use anything with a standard headphone connection. You just plug it into the headphone jack (should be labeled by a pair of headphones) in the back if the computer's older and in the front if the computer's newer.
