Which will happen first, a permanent colony on moon, or man first getting to mars, and when will both happen.
I think the moon in 2020 and mars in 2026
but that is probably very optimistic

The Moon.
Mars is a whole new set of problems and a big hole for NASA to throw it's money in to.
Don't expect anything to head out there until 2050.

Difficult to hazard a guess. There are several factors. Except for sending space probes we have not attempted any major expedition to Mars. More over the current technology on rocket fuels is conventional and has limitations on payloads. Some day things will move very fast if there are technological break through in this area. In all probability next major human attempt in space exploration has to be to the Moon and I hope it should happen by 2019 fifty years from the first man landing on Moon. But there is a big condition. There has to be peace and stability on planet Earth. Terrorist attacks and wars that are going on have to stop. No major progress is possible in this environment.

I think that a colony on the moon will come first. If that even happens. We have only been able to land on the moon once. (If that) so the probability of us skipping a lunar colony and moving straight on to Mars is highly unlikely. I think that if the lunar colony does happen it won't be for another century or so. Our technology is rapidly evolving but I don't see the capabilities needed for this coming about anytime soon.

A permanent moon base certainly happens first...but I think even 2030 would be optimistic, given the mood in congress over funding such an endeavor. I don't expect people on Mars in my lifetime, unless maybe the people are from China.

If you like, I have property available close to the new moon colony. I will sell it to you at a steep discount.
