Then of what kind would the postal code of UK start with?

Usually the post code relates to the county that you live in for example Birmingham codes start with B and London N for North London W for West Londs etc

I havefound this free database of UK postal codes. http://www.jibble.org/ukpostcodes/ I'm not sure how accurate it is. There are only 2800 codes, but then again the UK is a lot smaller than the US. Aaron Building Networks, Building Power --> http://www.campusactivism.org .

it depends on whereabouts in the uk you are eg southampton would be something like SO17 6QR and exeter would be EX225NE.
