Especially on the pinky finger? My highschool teacher said it was superstition associated with needing all fingers to be about the same length…is this true?

I don't think it's crazy...maybe if one person does it, but I've seen quite a few, and I've never asked one.

Yes.. that is gross... ! I guess some of them are lazy or .. they use their nail to pick their noses.
Ok.. not making fun and here is my proper answer to your question. The only reason I can think of is:
In Chinese palm reading (fortune-telling), the longer the pinky fingers the person got, they would have longer lives. Some said, it implies that person is talented / artistic. Therefore, they intend to prolong their pinky fingers for goodness.
If ever you have watched "The Last Emperor", you may recall in that movie the queen wore some kind of long metal faked nails (as accessories) on her pinky fingers to double the length of the fingers. As she wished she could rule the country forever.

OK, actually, there is some history to it. As some have said the aristocratic thing- it shows that you don't normally do manual labour, and therefore have higher status. Nowadays, however the main use really IS for picking things (nose, ear, pricetags, etc...). Some mechanics and repairmen also keep their thumbnails long so that they can turn screws without a screwdriver! (I'm NOT sh*tting you). Isn't it funny how a certain physical appearance can mean two different things depending on what period in history? Compare it to white Americans: in the 1800's skin-whitening products and powders were very popular because the upper class was pale-white from living indoors (ie: NOT out working in the fields), so white skin was considered beautiful. But now, there are tanning salons, and everyone is so concerned about not being brown enough, because pale white in modern times means you're not healthy, and don't get out and do exercise! Same with being overweight in Europe. Rennaisance women were rotund, and that was considered beautiful and sexy, but now it means you're lazy, or you eat too much! Go figure! Wealthy Chinese men do not keep their pinky or thumb nails long now, because it means you're old-fashioned, dirty, or too poor to hire someone else to fix your car! Ha! Don't know but there is a Chinese man that works at a restaurant in my area. He has a mole on his chin. It has some hair growing out of it that is about 6 inches long. Sick!

In my day it was popular for powder drug users to grow the pinky nail to snort coke. Kind of like the 1 earring left ear is cool thing. My wife is chinese and we live in Beijing, I just asked her about this and she doen't know, only said maybe to be able to clean their ears and nose, to which I laughed and said Bull sh**. So Maybe it's not traditional, but the drug thing and only coincidence that the person on drugs is chinese

Maybe some forgot to cut them? Lol. Back in the day to show status the upper class used to have there fingers grow because they didn't have to work. I'm chinese btw, and my nails are always short.

I think it is, but remember the Chinese are very religious and go by ancient traditions. It may also be that they are going through a time in the religious calander where they can't cut anything.

I don't know about Asians, or any nationality for that matter, but I do know that some drug addicts keep their pinkie nail long to be able to scoop up cocaine and snort it.

Ive never seen any chinese like that who wasnt in a kung fu flick. He either weird or its some really old old style.
