I'm just wondering. Is it the moisture content in the air? Optical illusion? I have always wondered, it is so beautiful. Yes, lightning is generally white, but my mom talks about remembering beautiful colors of heat lightning in South Dakota if I remember correctly. Thanks!

P.S. I notice with my little brother's train set, the electricity from the track is blue when discharging to the wheels, so maybe distance from a negative to a positive charge could have an effect?

And nima, what do you have against people my age? What, you think I'm stupid? Not to brag, but I'm much more mature and pay more attention in science than anyone in my school probably.

The question has two parts, so let me answer them in points

A. During a lightning...high energy is generated because of friction between clouds. This makes the ions in the atmosphere reach an excited state. These ions then emit light which corresponds to a wavelength of particular color. This color could be anywhere from white to blue, red etc..

B. The answer to your question that electricity has blue color is same as above A. - in this case electrons are energized in electricity supply and so they reach an excited state. During this excited state they emit light which corresponds to the wavelength of color Blue and that's why u see it colored.

Hope this helps.

i think 2 factors that affect it are what the temperature is & whatever is in the atmosphere at the time. i know heat lightning is generally pink in color....or at least that's the only color i've seen for the heat kind. that's about all i know. its definitely a good question to look into cause i'm sure there are other people out there who have wondered the same thing.

You seem to be very young .have to study more about physics.all i cant tell you at this time is that different colors come from different structures of materials .first of all you have to study chemistry and know about the layers of electrons around the atoms it will help you alot

well when u look at the sky, its of different atmospheric conditions all the time.... pressures, densities, moistures, etc. The light entering the atmosphere is refracted due to these conditions, and this allows you to see different lighting in the sky. The refraction of light itself is the splitting of the light into different wavelengths which allows us to see different colours. This is junior university physics though.

its because of our poor vision... we are only able to see between 405 Thz to 790 Thz, which is from red to violet.

what makes the colors, its the wavelength of light
