"If you buy a plant with open blooms, Miller suggests pulling off the tip of the anthers inside the flower (figure B). The anthers contain pollen which can spill and stain the flowers yellow. Another added benefit of removing the anthers is that the flowers last longer. After Easter, it's time to plant your lily."

So, part of the answer seems to be about staining the lily, part about making the bloom last longer -- every site I pulled up seemed to agree that it makes the bloom last longer! But then, how many of them do you have? Oooooofff -- is it worth the effort?

I do that with my showy lilies and amaryllies, but I am not sure it helps much. You might try picking two at about the same stage of development, removing it on one and not the other. See what you get.

I know with lilies they tend to last a bit longer if you do that.
