Sounds like you might want to dive into a reading of the Gospels, specifically, Jesus's parables. Most of them are illustrations of various proverbs & commandments from the Old Testament. Just a thought.

Along with Biblical proverbs there are Aesop's Fables, and the Brer Rabbit books which all end in Proverbs.

And the play "Androcles and the Lion" illustrates a proverb.

Androcles takes the thorn out of the lion's paw and later the lion saves him. Aesop has a take on it with lion and mice I think.

But the Androcles is short and really a good one. Check it out. I'm sure your librarian could help you find it.

Proverbs 3:5, 6
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

You could have the group standing around with nothing to do, mumbing to themselves about how bored they are when one of them says something like, "Let's go over Johnson Park and goof around there!"

One of you kind of hangs back as they rest start to leave. The ring leader named Jessie turns around and asks if you are coming?

The lights fade on the group and a spotlight comes onto the one that was hanging back. He thinks out loud something like:

Mom said I can't go over to Johnson Park because too many people are doing drugs there. But if I don't go with my friends, they'll think I'm a baby. I know I can take care of myself so what's the big deal? What mom doesn't know... God, what should I do?

An idea bulb comes down from the catwalk over the person's head that says, 'Honor thy father and thy mother."

The lights come back up over the group and the person says to the leader Jessie,"I've got to go home. See ya later."

The lights go down as the group leaves at one end of the stage and the person alone leaves at the other end.

When the lights go back up, the lone person is sitting at the dinner table with his folks. He's in different clothes to show time has passed. His dad is reading the paper. He remarks that things are really getting out of hand at Johnson Park. He says that it's on the front page that there was a shooting there and a boy named Jessie was shot.

The boy lifts his head and eyes Heavenward and mouths "thank you."

Can you use Proverbs from the Bible? That would be a creative idea. Go to this link: http://www.awitness.org/biblehtm/pr/index.htm
