there is a lot of dust around my desktop PC. does this affect the performance of the computer in long-term use? or it doesn't really matter as long as you clean it regularly? if it does, can u tell why.

It does effect your computer in the long term, due to the fact that dust slowly clogs the fans inside your computer, the ones on top of the processor and video card, these fans are needed to help cool the computer and therefore if it overheats due to the failing of the fans, then yes it causes problems.
Also having dust all over the cards and mother board can impede performance. So just hover it regularly.

So long as you clean regularly, there should not be any adverse impact to the performance of your computer. I had a client whose computer stopped working because dust collected over a period of years. I opened the case to find such thick layer of dust on the fan, that it stopped working. A quick cleaning took care of the problem (the client is in industrial business with lots of dust).
