Margaret Mitchell wrote "Gone With the Wind". Alexandra Ripley wrote the sequel, "Scarlett". Do you think there should be a sequel to "Scarlett"?

I don't think there should have been a "Scarlett." I'd hate to have to think how awful it would be to write a book based on character growths/events in that one.

No, I do not think there should be a 3 book. Scarlet did not do justice to Margaret Mitchell's original book. I have Gone with the Wind almost every year for nearly 30 years. I was so excited when the sequel came out and so very disappointed. At this time even if there was a third book I would not purchase it. There is one and only one Gone with the Wind. The author is no longer with us so no on should try and recreate her characters it just does not work.

I agree with laney_po. I don't know why we feel there have to be endless sequels to everything that went over big the first time.

If the original author didn't want to do a sequel, they probably had their reasons. It would be different if they started on one and had died before they could finish it. Then, by all means, hire a new author to come in and complete the work, using the original author's ideas and notes.

Coming back after someone's dead and trying to finish their story for them doesn't strike me as very ethical - or nice. The sequel never matches the spark of the original. Besides, I rather like to come up with my own endings to books that have an open one, like GWTW. It takes all the fun out of it if someone else gets to publish their own idea as "the authoritative version."

I see no need for one more sequel. In fact the only reason I read Scarlett was because I wanted to see if she and Rhett will be together :) And now they are and they will live happily ever after :)

But it is true that Scarlett lost a lot of her character in the sequel. I don't even want to imagine what would happen in one more book!

No. In fact, there shouldn't have been a sequal to Gone With the Wind. Especially the one that was written. I remember reading Scarlett, and I didn't even know who Scarlett was anymore. The things she said and did in that novel are out of character with the things she said and did in Gone With The Wind.

nope...sequels generally aren't as good. even though the fans do beg for them.

i didn't read scarlett...i just imagine it to be a big let down. gone with the wind was enough for me.

Yes, it would be good to follow Scarlett and her family on down through the ages.
