Mainly it begins when England as a country was formed. It begins frm thr. England was formed when 3 ethnic groups came and settled down in the region whose names go something like Angles, Saxons and Juts or something. Then it became a country. English's origin is also somewhat confusing. The different communities had different languages and it got all mixed up ending in the formation of English. Something like tht happened. Then mostly i think ppl came frm areas like Denmark. Thts why old English is damn difficult to be followed by ppl who know modern English. Cos its got words frm Danish, Scandinavian and all. In old English very few books are thr with me. But thr's one famous book named "From Beowulf to Johnson". After that medieval English period came. Medieval English has a very famous author named Geoffrey Chaucer. His book's name is "The Canterbury tales". This English has a lot of French words mixed in. Its somewhat understandable. Then came the period called The Renaissance. During this period Edmund Spenser and Shakespeare were famous. Then Puritan period came. During this period censorship kinda things were very famous. Then Restoration, 18th century literature, Romantic period, Victorian Period and Modern Literature followed one after the other.
