Seriously... Burlington, VT. It is beautiful, near lots of skiing, it is a college town so there are events and educated people all around you. It is really close to Montreal maybe just 40 minutes away, and so you can always go see world-class theater or other entertainment and shopping in Montreal if you need it, but still live in a small quaint town. I think New England is good because their towns haven't become just one highway with strip-malls and chain-restaurants with all of their big signs looming as the landscape.

Hanover, NH is also great. It is a college town (where Dartmouth is), so there is a good hospital and educated people. There are always events and so forth.

Amherst, MA is really nice as well.

If you want to be in the South I hear Asheville, NC is great, but maybe too many hippies. Also, Blacksburg, VA is nice, but very rural, but since it's a college town it gets lots of events.

Out west, Keystone, CO is gorgeous and there's lots of great skiing.

We just moved from the Philly area to Bedford, VA. We love it here. Rocky Mount VA - the town where I teach is great too. Both towns are a 30 minute drive to Roanoke which has pretty much everything you need. Lower Taxes, Lower Bills - car insurance, utilities and nice weather.
