I agree withall the other answers...

I think (I know this is so silly) that Hank Hill from "King of the Hill" resembles (on the inside) what an American is all about (but he's VERY exaggerated).

I think a true American has respect for the freedom we have regardless of how crooked the gov't can be. There's more to an American than just being born here.

And really, I think Canadians, Latin Americans, South Americans, etc. all have the right to call themselves Americans. they're in an "American" (north or south) so I believe it's self that the USA took the name for themselves.

First, one must think that the term "American" applies only to those who live in the U.S.A.
After that, you must be either completely liberal or steadfastly puritanical. you must be either a democrat or a republican. you must support the troops, the war in iraq and the president and also be outraged about the war but support the troops and despise the president. you must own both a Hummer and a Prius. you must live in the richest country in the world with the lowest per-capita spending on the arts and public health care. you must recycle your bottles and cans religiously while producing more garbage than anyone else in the world. you must relentlessly pursue freedom for all while Amnesty International condemns you along with China and Russia for human rights abuses. Also snips, snails, and puppydog tails. THAT's what makes an American!

Being born here, voting, being proud of my birth/home country (Good ole' USA!), ability to voice out freely, accepting others freely, touching the Liberty Bell, visiting Betsy Ross' house, the Statue of Liberty, Independence Hall, Washington DC's monuments, loving all other Americans (no matter who they vote for), and serving our beloved country in the US Army.
