There are many websites you may find useful. Have you considered downloading LDraw? It's a LEGO CAD program that will enable you to create virtual LEGO houses. You could then build your models using a computer to ascertain whether or not you want to build them in real life, as the professional LEGO builders do.

when my brothers build legos, they start with the base (its just a thin green piece of lego that can be built upon...kinda like the road here: http://shawn.redhive.com/random/legos.jpg )
Then just start building whatever type of house you want!
