how would you go about repainting a metal fire escape?

Just like anything else.

Preparation is everything. Scrape and power-wash the entire structure to remove any loose paint or dirt. Do this on a hot, dry day to minimize rust.

Use a primer, ideally one that is designed for metal. Paint it as quickly as you can after cleaning, again to avoid rust.

Ask for assistance at the hardware store for a good quality exterior paint. Most exterior metal is painted with a gloss oil or enamel based paints. I would avoid latex, unless there is a latex which specifically says it will work well on metal.

Well i would think about it this way,
if you got to the door and the handle had melted from a fire or the heat in the room had some how made the door to hot to touch, id look at things that dont contract heat as well colours>
so if there was a fire beside the door it would be less dangerous to touch

climb down the ladder from da top and start painting from the top down. but first you should scrape off any loose paint with a wire brush

any type of paint for wood or metal, but use an undercoat first, wait a day for it to dry then apply the over coat
