I would say that it would be better to hire your own car.
What you could do is to get a tourist attraction book at the airport (or where ever) which would list all the places that the organised tour would take you and then drive around yourself.

With your own car, you can spend exactly how much time you want at each place whereas with the tours, you may stay too long or too short at a place for your liking.
Also, if there is a place that you would like to go to but the tour doesn't go there, then you can drive to the place yourself.
It's much more convenient and easy, plus it's not that expensive - especially if you go down with a few people who can share the costs, as opposed to paying per person for the tour.

Cheers. have a good trip.

that depends on what you want to do and how much freedom of movement you want to have.

an organised tour will take you to all the tourist destinations but in a hire car you are able to go off the beaten track and find all the interesting little spots. And that part of the country is gorgeous. However if you are going to do the wine route and wine tours and you intend of swallowing all the wine you taste, its best that you have a driver.

Hire a car as the Garden Route is rich in places to visit and stop. In an organised tour you'll be obliged to stop where they want to.

A tour operator takes all the worry and pressure of you trying to find the best spots and ensure you see the most special places the country has to offer as they have done it many times before and will have the best advise.

I traveled to South Africa and used Dirk's company to take me around and absolutely loved it. Made my family feel at home and very welcomed.

The backyard path is the coastal path between Cape city and Port Elizabeth. that's stunningly appealing. decide for it. Phugs: in case you went from Jo'burg to CT alongside the backyard path somebody had heavily lost their way! The excursion exchange into in all likelihood purely too low funds. LOL! Cheri one million: The places you point out are staggering yet maximum are no longer on the backyard path.

It depends on your itenarary and your ability to drive on left-hand side of the road. But at the moment that area is flooded quite badly, so I would wait a couple of months before going there.
