The 64 is just that a 64 bit processor. So if you take a athlon 64 3200+ and a semperon 3200+(32 bit processor) the Athlon 64 will hand the semperon its *** because it can move more data through it
It is like trying to pour a gallon of water down a 2 inch pipe sure you could but it would take less time then pouring it down a 4 inch pipe.

even if sempron have faster clock speed, athlon 64 is better because of the hyper transport technology and its L2 cache.
You can compare the performance by using some benchmark tool
