Obviously if you have a MD or PhD, you're "Doctor so and so." But if you have a JD, you're not a "Doctor so and so" even though JD stands for Juris Doctor. What about a PharmD? If someone has a PharmD, can they call themselves Doctor __ ?

Anyone who has earned a doctorate degree can call him- or herself a doctor. But it is not customary for people who have a JD or PharmD to do so.

Only those with a medical degree (MD) or ostepathic degree (DO) are called "doctors", who can perform surgeries and prescribe medication...
although technically lots of people can be called doctors in the general sense-- PhD--doctor of philosophy. Doctor means teacher in Latin.
