You will need a wireless router and a wireless network card for your PC. You don't have to notify the cable company.

The simplest setup is to connect your cable modem's output to the wireless router's WAN jack.

First connect your PC's current LAN connection to one of the router's LAN jacks. Follow the router's instructions to configure a wireless network. i.e. network name, security settings, password, etc.

Next install the wireless network card and its software onto your PC. Create a wireless network connection via the NETWORK CONNECTION icon in the control panel.

Follow the instructions for your wireless network card to locate the wireless network in your router and connect to it.

you dont need to change or even notify your cable provider at all...you just need to replace the router you got from that internet provider with a Wireless router..then you need to get a Wireless adaptor for your desktop so you can receive the signal...Netgear do a USB Wireless adaptor for about $50 here in Australia...worth checking out
