Depends on what type of music you play.
Fender Strat. - Best electric for bluesy smooth playing
PRS - more classic rock feel
These are my top 2.
There are a million different choices, but plan on spending some money, becuse it will be worth it to get a decent guitar. Don't get like a Yamaha or crappy brand that you will literally be kicking yourself for buying like 4 months down the road. Research and go in and play around on some. most guitar shops will let you. I say you get a taylor acoustic. - best quality sound by far, and I know it is not electric, but its so close to perfect. Also, if you are getting an electric, get a good delay pedal... you can play solos along with whatever you create.
DON'T BUY A SQUIER!!!

Fender makes a "bargain" line called Squier if you're looking for an electric. Any of their lower-end models would work fine for a beginner. If you want something higher end, try a real Fender or a Gibson.
Go to a music store and play the model(s) you're thinking of buying - don't pick one online and buy it without trying it out first if at all possible. Musician's Friend will give you a 45-day return privilege to try out a new instrument, so you might think about them if the music store deal won't work for you.

When I bought mine, I got a lot of help from the 2 local music shops in town. It ended up coming down to the one that "fit"... I liked the way I looked when I held it and it felt comfortable.
