I want to measure the psychological personalities of young travellers (international travellers, abckpackers)? I want to meaure if they are :

(a) outward looking - willing to engage with the local popualtion, travelling off the beaten tracks, staying away from tourist infrastructure.

OR

(b) inward looking - those who prefer to stick around other travellers, staying in tourist areas in tourist hostels, eating in western restaurants etc.

What kind of questions do I need to ask and more importantly how do I analyse the responses?

Ask questions where there are no implicit value judgments. That is, someone taking the exam doesn't sense that there is a 'right' answer.

Example: Would you ask directions from an American because you want to be sure you understand them and don't get lost or would you ask directions from a local because interacting with the population is all part of the fun.

Tally up the score. The more answers like the former make someone inward. The more answers like the latter make someone outward. No test is perfect. There are inherent biases in every question. We do the best we can. Over time, if you see that nearly everyone answers a particular question the same way, it might be a bad question.

The majority of tourists I've dealt with, and that's quite a few, are cattle. They stay with other tourists, doing touristy things, and are perfectly happy with that.

Not me.
