My friend made over £1000 (~$2000), mostly selling second hand clothes of the 'alternative' variety, like black velvety and gothic things. She would get these at garage sales and resell them. I think she's stopped now, as she was unemployed at the time and had nothing better to do.

Making money on ebay still requires the same hard work you'd invest in a job. I used to go to flea markets and stuff looking for used electronics for really low prices. I once made more than $5,000 in a few months just on the side while working a full time job. That was luck, though, with some very lucky finds.

It's not just how much you make. It's the crazy stories that you hear about how much something goes for that the seller never knew was valuable.
I have a friend that picked up a two octive 1970s vintage Moog Synthesizer. He paid $27 for and sold it to a person in England for nearly $800.
