If you have a virus, and your system will not boot because of it system restore is unlikely to solve the problem. But, you can see. In all likelihood if you have a virus you will need to boot with an EBD (emergency boot disk) or recovery CD.. You will need to try and backup your data and rebuild the system from a new install of the OS.

Did you have System Restore enabled?

Check that first

Start-->Setttings-->Control Panel -->System --> System Restore Tab

If that is enabled (which it isn't by default) you "may" be able to roll back..

What are the symptoms? Not boot? Freeze on an explorer screen with no icons,

Try going into safe mode, AS ADMINISTRATOR, and create another user account. It may just be something within the startup sequence of your user account.

Malware generally embeds crap in the registry, What software have you downloaded and installed recently? If you get into safe mode uninstall it.

Download and RUN a real spyware removal program The one I trust Adaware, it is available freely, Google Free Adaware..

Also check a couple of keys in your registry

HKEYLOCALMACHINE->
SOFTWARE-->
MICROSOFT-->
WINDOWS-->
CURRENTVERSION->

then RUN, RUNONCE, and SETUP (may contain the problem child)

VIEW!! don't modify anything the RUN, and RUN ONCE KEYS Make note of the programs that are getting started at runtime,

Google each name to see it there may be an associated problem or if it is malware/spyware. and see what removal techniques are required.

Taking computer back to a couple of days will not resolve the virus problem. What happens actually is the registry information which has been saved by windows earlier replaces the current registry and because of this ,if the problem pertains to certain improper installations that have corrupted the registry, then it would be resolved. For a virus problem the best thing would be to your any popular anti-virus scanners and remove it. However if you want to take back your computer back to a couple of days ago in windows XP then press F8 during boot and select the restore my computer to previous working option.

Lots of answers about using System Restore but you need to remove the virus and using System Restore will not necessarily do that. You need some good Anti Virus software, then use System Restore. You should remember to regularly create Restore Points so that you can overcome future problems.
