Couple of Reasons:
1) SE. Asia was rich in oil. ( ie: Brunei )
2) Raw Materials such as Rubber for Manufacturing
3) The Ideal that Japan was the treu dominant Asian/Oriental Race and that all others were considered inferior
4) To deal with the threat of European influence and "empire" in the region. ( ie: British in Singapore and Hong Kong, French in InodChina and the Dutch in the East Indies ) Japan felt that Europe should have no influence in that region.

they wanted more land naturally, and also because s.e.a was rich in many different kinds of resources not present in japan... for example, tin and rubber in malaysia, singapore's delightful trade route, and also because s.e.a was the easiest to invade since there wasnt any real military presence...

Yes, right.
And is it not only in(during)WW2. Since before WW2.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_of_Japan
The starting point and the reason is in the Meiji Era.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meiji_Period
Around 1890-1900, Western countries, were in China, and very close to Japan.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_China#Qing_Dynasty
Especially Russia was a severe threat to Japan.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Japanese_War
After this, Japanese nationalism had risen, which seemed to parallel the growth of nationalism in the West.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dwa_period#The_Rise_of_Ultra-Nationalism
And at this time, Japan military power was trying to seize the power in the government, and finally they succeeded in the WW2.
On the other hand, there are 2 sides of coins.
Other members of government and civilian were trying to build modern cities.

Also Japan army did many bad and disgraceful deed, especially in S.E.A.
Japan should not repeat that era anymore.
