Well I am not a mother however I am a single dad. I found that baby powder work good for boys however if you are having a girl baby powder can cause a yeast infection if you use to much so myself I would not recommend. Congratulations and good luck! :)

I used it on my first baby all the time. I liked that it kept the folds of his skin dry on hot days.
With my second baby I've hardly used it at all and really I haven't noticed any difference. It does smell nice, though.
I think it is personal preference. However the pediatrician and the nurses at the hospital will recommend against it because of the small risk that baby will aspirate the powder and suffocate. I'm sure that almost never happens but there must have been a few incidents and lawsuits and so now they have to tell you not to use it.
If you do decide to use it, use the type that is 100% Pure Cornstarch. It does not float in the air the way regular baby powder does, and it works better too.

Baby power if puffed into the air can get into the baby's lungs. It can be very bad for them. If you decide you must use it, turn away from the baby and put a little bit into your hand then pat it onto the baby. All baby powder is really for is a barrier, to help keep them dry. If you change your baby often you shouldn't have a problem with diaper rash. If a rash does occur and you know you keep your baby dry, it could be a sign of an allergy. In the even of a rash, an ointment should be used and not powder anyway. So my suggestion is: NO don't bother with baby powder.

I didn't use it at all. I found it to be useless. Plus you have to be very careful using it. A baby can inhale powder and develop a type of pneumonia. I was so scared of this happening, that's why I decided not to ever use powder. My friend used baby powder at every diaper change, and her baby got a ton of diaper rashes, I'm not saying the powder caused it, but I didn't use powder and my daughter rarely got a diaper rash. By the way, the best cream, in my opinon, to prevent diaper rash, is Balmex. It has a mild smell and just seemed cleaner than the other creams out there. Congratulations on your pregnancy.
P.S.- There is some speculation that using powder on girl babies can cause them to eventually develop cervical cancer, I read that in a couple of articles.

Good gracious Mandy...they are trying to freak you out with the whole can't inhale the baby powder thing! Yes it is true it can cause problems if they inhale A LOT of it...so it is better to use a cornstarch based powder instead but in all honesty if you are only using a tiny bit in the diaper and don't shake it everywhere (common sense thing...ya know!) there is nothing to worry about. I used a little on my son just to keep things fresh down there, but by no means do you need to use it. As long as you change their diaper every two hours or sooner if you can tell they are wet, you probably won't ever have a bad diaper rash to worry about. They are really easy to prevent with frequent changings unless your baby has ultra sensitive skin and is prone to them. The powder thing is really just a preference and you can just try it and see if you like it.

Congratulations!!! I hope you get as much joy from your new baby as I have had from my children. I used baby powder for a while with my first child but I stopped using it after a while because it really didn't do anything. Got the same amount of nappy rash (maybe more) with it than without so I didn't bother after a while, I just gave everything a good clean and left it at that.

I've used baby powder for mostly heat rash, or when their skin gets a little irritated from the diaper itself (not diaper rash, though). Also, it's good in hot weather to rub some powder on, it cools them off a little and absorbs the moisture.
But, be careful, I've read that you shouldn't use it on young babies because they can breathe in the dust. I don't know how true it is, but if anything, put the powder in your hand first, then rub it on the baby, so you're not shaking it on them around their face or anything.

Powder if inhaled can cause breathing problems. And as for a rash on the bottom It turns to a paste and holds moisture to their skin stick with the a&d to prevent a rash and Destitin or Balmex to clear one up. (just be sure to check the % of Zinc oxide in it. some have as little as 5% while others have 40%). Powder is good for under the neck where babies get heat rash or a yeast infection under there.

Baby powder was the only thing that helped my son's diaper rashes. I used it at each diaper change.
Yes, it is recommended that you use Corn Starch due to the risk of inhale that can cause lung problems. Just don't use too much and don't let your child play with the powder bottle. I never had a problem.
Congrats to you. Happy Parenting.
