I can't remember exactly if it is the name of the job or the tool used. But it's a lumber camp reference to the job of marking the logs from your camp. That way they would be identifiable at the mill down river. So you would receive credit for them, Knowing what was received from your camp determined your pay.Kind of like how cattle are branded, so you know your herd from another. This is the correct useage of that term. However it's also slang for a mans penis.
