Originally the company's name was "Lucky Goldstar". But this was abbreviated to simply "LG". Probably helps to resolve some trademark issues, and it distances their brand from the old "Lucky Goldstar", which was known as the cheapest and lowest quality electronics you could find.
The tagline "Life's Good" is probably an attempt of changing the meaning of the abbreviation as it came later.
