I've noticed people on Y answers automatically think 'Partner' means your significant other. B/f John says 'Partner' when he is talking about his father is in bed with his business partner. Should we say 'Life Partner' or something to make it clear?

That's a great point! Partner can mean romantic partner or business partner and of course it doesn't define the gender either ... possibly leading to embarrassment!

You could well set a new trend here in clarification .... 'Significant Other Half' spells it out I suppose but what a drab, long winded phrase! How about 'My Man' or 'My Woman' ..... 'The man in my life' ..... 'He who floats my boat' ....... :-)

I think if we are talking about a business partner we should be specific, being that when we say just partner it usually means our better half.. But thats just my opinion..

I think people who have been married and are no longer married but have a significant other prefer to call them partners because it is more appropriate. Perhaps their husband/wife died and they feel bad calling their new love their girlfriend/boyfriend, or they feel too old to say girlfriend/boyfriend. I think it's an individual preference thing. I say my fella. I will be calling him my Hubby next year!

The term "business partner" is fine.
In my young day almost all couples were married.
The only man who had a partner was -- The Lone Ranger.

It seems like every term we come up with always offends some group...my partner and I stick with partner..but you can also refer to him as my lover,my husband(we're canadian) or anything else...I know who he is to me.
