Why does it explode in the first place? Will it work with coke regular? How can I best exploit this interesting bit of knowledge?

This is not a chemical reaction. The candy surface produces a template where CO2 in the solution can form gas and it evolves from the solution as it does when it is shaken or heated. Sugar containing soda will work too it is just a lot messier to clean up.

Works best with diet coke... it's something about creating a chemical response between the sugars or something like that...

First drink the coke lite, so you dont waste it. Then eat the candy so you dont waste it. Beside your mother will make you clean up the mess if you do it in the house.
