Learn how to count back change!!!! WITHOUT the cash register. Say someone's total is $8.43 and they give you a 20. You get the 2 pennies and say "44, 45" then the nickel "50" then the two quarters "9 (as in nine dollars)", then a one dollar bill "ten" then a ten dollar bill "and that makes twenty". You will never give out the wrong change this way because you count it to yourself as you are getting it from the drawer then you count it BACK to them as you hand it to them. Stops people from shorting you money and stops you from being short in your register. And most importantly.... you won't be standing there dumbstruck when you typed in the wrong amount they gave you and the register is not telling you how much to give back. I HATE THAT! Every cashier needs to know how to give change without a computer telling them.

From my point of view, there are several things you can do to give great customer service in your job as a cashier. Make eye contact with all your customers and say hello, even when they are being really grumpy. Ask them if they would like any help packing their items and if there is anything else you can help them with. I think the most important thing is to say thank you and goodbye when they leave. Overall, just be happy and give the appearance that you are enjoying your job, even if you're having a bad day. Remember, for some members of the community, such as the elderly, you may be the only person they have contact with that day. Make it count, make them feel welcome and valued as a customer.
