I love the Sims 2! The Sims 2 Community is absolutely huge. There are people of all ages playing, some I know of are programmers, medical doctors, some are moms and dads with other backgrounds, and of course there are lots of kids. I think actually the spectrum of players is on average is not all that young. ;)
My advice for ME if I were just starting the game is to use some mood helpers when desperately needed. You honestly can't get far in the game if you haven't learned about keeping your sims happy and because of the scope of the game, finding all the ways that work for you and your particular family can take quite a bit of time. With a download like this painting
http://www.simchaotics.net/Files/MerolaSims2/EnergizerPainting.htm
when a sim is driving you crazy and you can't get anything done use it once to get him cheered up and then progress to learning more about how the game works.
Baby steps. :)
I had terrible times with my first sim pregnancy and babies. But with the help of the painting, I learned how to better manage the moods without cheats.
Later I was able to play many families in "legacy style" without any cheats and that made my skills even better. Legacy style challenges make the game so much fun because you have to figure out the best way to do things without taking a cheat, but no worries now, your skill level isn't up to a legacy at first, so practice helps.
When you get better, you can try challenges
http://www.ts2challenge.tk/
Even try your hand at making movies, like this one (you need a fast connection for this!):

To make movies as awesome as that, you will need to learn to use the camera angles, work out which cheats will help repeat a scene so you get it just right. You are actually a writer and a director of a movie.
Definitely get a membership with your registered game at the main site - and check out the "community" bbs at the top of the screen:
http://thesims2.ea.com/
and you'll be able to read oodles of tips, some of these are specific to some expansion packs:
http://thesims2.ea.com/mysimpage/blog.php?user_id=4639
A great place to read what other people are doing with their sims is here:
http://community.livejournal.com/thesims2/
If you don't have any expansion packs yet, definitely get Nightlife! (and if you like cats and dogs, get the Pets EP when it comes out)
Anyway, welcome to the Simming community. :)

One word of advice: don't ruin the gaming by using cheat codes from the very beginning. It's a fun and easily accessible game; just pick up a family you like, and start exploring. You will soon get addicted and you won't be able to play other games.

You should start by not wanting to get pregnant, just have sex everyday or every other day and don't think about getting pregnant, just have fun with your partner. Get more useful information and guides to get pregnant here https://tr.im/0ih2Q
after sex-put a pillow under your butt or prop your feet up on the wall so your pelvis is tilted
eat healthy
back off caffiene
workout, even if its just a 20 minute walk a day, be active.
