on After The Gold Rush album, neil young wrote a song called Southern Man, which was about the racism in the south. Lynard Skynnard are from the south and wrote sweet home alabahma in reply.

It's all right there in the words to both songs, Southern Man and Sweet Home Alabama. They later said everybody took it way too seriously and the whole band were and always had been big Neil Young fans.
Neil wanted them to record his song Powderfinger, but they never did.
