there is a reason behind every action eg you eat to live. Actions like this are said to be conscious although unconscious actions are a little more complicated usually because there is no evident reason for the action or consciously the action was an accident. eg freud stated that if a person knocks over a vase then it is an unconscious action because the action wasn't intended, therefore he suggests that there is an underlying reason to which the vase was knocked over. either that the person didnt like the vase or that the person the vase was given by is disliked. It's all down to repression have a look at repressed memories for more in depth theories. all actions are conscious or subconscious it's a fact you either know why you do it or you dont and if you dont then there is an underlying reason why you do it the problem is what is that reason.

there are many schools of thought on this classification - it was freud who first coined the term the unconscious. He likened the mind to an iceberg - the conscious decision making part would be above the water, and the unconscious, probably primitive brain, below and out of reach of conscious analysis. Other psychologists dismissed this, suggesting that other forces were at work.
Freud believed that there were several stages during development from childhood to adult hood that defined our personality. If some stage was not resolved, it would cause conflict between the id, the ego and the super-ego. Unique characteristics and quirks could be attributed to one of the three dominating us unconsciously.
