I am a professional pianist. An electric keyboard is best for you. Just buy a Yamaha for $150-200 at Circuit City or a similar store. I personally prefer a real acoustic piano, because I love the sound. But they require tuning. They are not portable, and you cannot listen with earphones when you practice. To move an acoustic piano is expensive. Many people give up trying to learn an instrument after a few months. If you are still playing 2 years from now, buy a used acoustic piano from a private party (again Yamaha). A piano store will charge you double what the piano is worth. I was trained at the age of 6 as a classical pianist on an acoustic piano. I would not advise that approach, today, to a child of mine. Learning to play in every key is important, if you want to be good.

They're both different.

I started keyboard when I was a teen. I like it a lot, it was cool because it's easy to play an easy song at the first lesson. With the right hand, you play the melody, with the left hand you play the chords (3 or 4 key hit at the same time) and the keyboard play everything else !

After 4 years, I wanted to play blues, and my keyboard teacher teach me blues with my keyboard, and I play in duo with a girl who play the piano. So wanted to try blues with the piano also.
That's how I started piano lesson instead of keyboard lessons.

Now I only play the piano, I take so much pleasure in it, way better than when I played the keyboard. I play some ragtimes but mainly classical music.

Do you already have an intrument ? If no, I think you should buy a good keyboard, so you could try to play both piano and keyboard.
Yamaha is a really good brand. My keyboard is a yamaha, and my piano is a yamaha too.

Depends a lot on what you like... I learned piano from the very beginning and have gotten into keyboards and now play in a band.

It's easier to go from piano to keyboards than from keyboards to classical piano but it is possible to do both. Otherwise, choose what you want to wind up playing...

Pros and cons

Piano's cost more than keyboards. It is possible to buy a cheap electronic keyboard for a few hundred dollars. Most pianos (even electronic pianos) are close to $1000-00AUD.

More instant variety with keyboards - different sounds/voices, drum machine, etc.

More distraction with keyboards - you may well get caught up with playing/making instant music with one-touch chords rather than learning the hard, difficult, laborious but fundamental stuff piano style. The end effect is not worth worrying about if you only intend to play keyboards, but if you particularly want to play piano you will need to master these basics.

The majority (not all) of keyboard players will tend to be right hand dominant right hand players... play music with right hand, twiddle knobs and push buttons with left. Again, only a problem if you sit down at an actual piano.

It depends on what you plan to do with you newly found skill of playing piano or keyboards?
I'll tell you that keyboards are easier to learn but in the long run you may wish that you learned piano..... so if you are able... learn piano first because you can always change to keyboards without a problem, but it would be harder to switch from keyboards up to piano because piano is harder to play.

What kind?..... I would say get a synthesized piano. Yamaha makes good ones. I haven't heard any keyboards/pianos lately but I loved the sound of a fender Rhodes.... but anywayz, get a good sounding synthesized type of piano and many has other instruments like strings and so on.... but all in all....

Have fun.

Classical piano! I have both, classical piano has a better sound to it! BY FAR! No matter how good the keyboard is, you can never duplicate the sound of a piano!
