There could be many reasons.
1. Your SMPS or Processor fan is not working. Then due to overheating PC will restart. Check both these fans.
2. A faulty or loose RAM or any PCI card. Check/Replace RAM and check whether they are properly inserted.
3. Something crashed in your OS. A re-installation of service pack may work, otherwise re-install OS.
4. A Virus, do a thorough checkup
5. Last but not least a faulty SMPS or a loose power cable.

Check the LM sensors in the CMOS SETUP, upon a boot. see if the fans are doing their proper speeds (Some Dells, Gateways, Microtels might be 2500 rpm) but, most should be 5,000rpms. Temps should be CPU around 136 or less, and system 90 degrees F or less.
If more, you need to clean the grilles, put more air space around the system box, change the fans if they are slow, or add an exhaust fan for every two drives you have installed!
When I add a second CD or hard drive, I add fan in the rear of the tower!
AND, if you suspect the OS, gett a LiveCDrom to do the maintenance testing, by booting from the CD, and running the system until it passes the time when it would shutdown, in Microsoft OS.
If it continues to run fine, then you need to wipe and reload Microsoft, or, replace it with one of the marvelous FREE Unix Clones that also process 8 to 50 times faster!!!
My favorite: http://pclinuxos.com resembles Mac OS X! includes 5,000 GAMES, Programs, applications!
http://livecdlist..com has 309 FREE!
http://distrowatch.com has 500+, FREE!
