I think that if you read enough and gather enough information, you will find some consistencies in anything. Horoscope reading is not much different. When you poll people, you will find that many 'fit' into types and categories. Over the years, people have fine-tuned and developed certain personality traits and styles that groups of people may have. None of it is truly dictating your exact personality, or mood, or design in life. It's a combination of 'guessing' and 'ruling out' and "sameness" within people. As far as being able to tell which ones are genuine - you really can't. As you said - they are all too general, vague and can apply to a number of people.

horoscopes are based on the "forer effect" theory
they are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people
'In his classic 1948 experiment, Forer administered a personality test to his students. Rather than scoring the tests and giving individual assessments, he gave all the students the exact same analysis copied from a newspaper astrology column. The students were then asked to evaluate the description on a scale of zero through five, with five being the most accurate. The average evaluation was 4.26.
The Forer effect shows that people tend to accept generalised descriptions of their personalities without realising that the same evaluation could apply to nearly anyone else, because people want the results to be true.'
because it is so vague and the person believes the analysis is supposedly tailored specifically for them, it makes them believe they are really like that
this is actually applied to MANY things - makes sense

Let's see now.
Today you will face some burning questions, and relatives will enter your thoughts. Later on you will receive a small surprise. Someone will tell you something you never heard before. Keep an eye out for someone wearing jeans. They might walk by.
Todays lucky numbers. 1, 3, 4, 7, 9 or 2, 5, 6 and 8

In one of the new papers can not remember which one bit the guy writes a load of cr@p that any Tom, Dick or Harry could write. usually it common sense stuff like If you run across a road without looking you might get hit by a car. he always writes a load of laughable tosh. However there are some people who live buy there stars and make themselves believe what is written is true.
Take say your stars in four news papers for that day and each one will say different. I believe that our destiny is planned by God and we can turn different corners or take different paths in life but what God has planned for us will eventually happen.
There is a market for the Stars as people want to believe in them and those people who do will always defend their belief that the stars are true as they don't want to admit how foolish and naive they are

Horoscopes are all false, would it really be possible for 1 in 12 people all to have the same things happen to them, if u look into them enough you will find something that relates to you, but the same is with everything, you will always find things to relate with you, and as for horoscopes in papers and magazines, does it assume that they will only be true for their readers?

i know they dont make it up, they just use a more general approach with transits any of the planets make by aspect to your sun sign, and any transits with the current planetary alignment. so it could seem very vague and sometimes be untrue depending on the person.
you can get more a more personalised horoscope based on your entire natal chart. (will require a birth time for more accuracy).
even then horoscopes only affect ur life, generally pull you in one direction. you, however are the one who makes the choice.

Horoscopes are not real. The only way they are ganna be right is if you read them and make them come ture. No one can decide your fate but yourself. The stars don't know whats ganna happen to you tomorrow or next week. Horoscopes are just a fun thing.

There are people who work hard in the field of astrology, but the horoscopes printed in the daily newspapers...welll... I know that someone who used to work in a big daily magazine told me that editor trusted horoscopes to someone who hadn't turned the article in in time...making up (really making up) horoscopes was the punishment for these lazy journalists... so i guess i must say "yes, they are made up"

Well, you have to understand that each individual horoscope say for Cancer will only apply to 1 in 12 people. Thats why if you look at two different newspaper horoscopes they will be different. Its all to do with planetary postions etc.

Georgia Nicols' Sun sign reports are based on real Astrology and transits. Yes, she's creative and funny, but her reports are genuine.
I know that because when I read them I can pick out the parts that are Astrological, particularly what house the transiting Moon is in for every sign of the zodiac.
You really should read for your Ascendant sign, not your Sun sign. They are more accurate that way.
http://www.georgianicols.com/daily/
----------
Newspaper Horoscopes:
No, they are not accurate because they are not individualized using your date, place and exact time of birth.
They are interpreted using "solar charts" and current transits of the planets, current aspects between the transiting planets with a lot of creativity thrown in for the interpretation.
The horoscopes in the newspapers and online are actually based on your Ascendant, the sign on the first house cusp, not your Sun sign, which is one of the reasons why they are inaccurate. The other thing to note is that they are not personalized to your date, place and time of birth. The majority of the readers out there do not know their Ascendant sign, so they are told to read their horoscope for their Sun sign, which is incorrect. You should actually be reading for your Ascendant sign.
This is how solar charts work:
Aries on the first house, Taurus on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for an Aries Ascendant.
Taurus on the first house, Gemini on the 2nd house amd so on through the 12 houses for a Taurus Ascendant.
Gemini on the first house, Cancer on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for a Gemini Ascendant.
Cancer on the first house, Leo on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for a Cancer Ascendant.
Leo on the first house, Virgo on the 2nd house and so on through the 12 houses for a Leo Ascendant.
And so on throughout all 12 sign of the zodiac.
Now throw in the planets in signs, planets in houses and their aspects and interpret the charts on a daily basis.
Bingo, you have a horoscope for online and in newspapers.
http://www.geocities.com/astrologyhouses/housesystems.htm
Solar: The position of the Sun is taken as the first house cusp and each house cusp is thirty degrees farther along in the zodiac. Note that in this house system neither the Ascendant nor the Midheaven are necessarily house cusps. This system is commonly used when the Ascendant and Midheaven are not known. It is therefore commonly used in newspaper astrology where a horoscope is being produced for everyone of a certain Sun-sign.
