When that happens people always say its because of the ascendants, that they say influence a bit more than it's credit to. So if your ascendants are a match they overcome the original signs. You must look to the whole chart to see what type of people you are attracted to not just your own sun sign and the other person's sun sign.

What aspects do your Sun, Moon and Ascendent make?

The 1st house is you, your personality and appearance..
The 5th house rules love affairs.
The 7th house rules partnerships.
The 8th house rules sexuality.

What planets are in the above houses and what aspects do they make? What signs are those planets in? What sign is on the cusp of those houses? What elements (fire, earth, air & water) and qualities (cardinal, fixed & mutuable) are involved?

Well, I wouldnt just go by sun signs.
Some people dont have the traits of their sun signs. So therefore thats where you look at your Ascending sign (rising sign)
I just read that they dont make a good couple either,

But i have also read taht Cancer and Gemini dont unless they make it work. and thats what me and my bf are doing !!

the only way this cancer & areis stuff can be true if you believe in it. the problem is that whatever we listen we have blind faith on it, therefore we try to make things happen that way. thus just dont believe in things you hear just like that. after all if it was to be true people would be looking zodiacs before falling in love!!!!!!
