My friend has AOL, can he access Yahoo for instant messaging?

no you can not IM to AOL contact . Yes, they must have Yahoo!. Yahoo! user can only IM to Yahoo!.

No AOL yet With Yahoo messenger 8.0 beta can talk to MSN IM friends.
