It's just a smile from a passing stranger ~ no harm intent meant. Just a friendly smile on the face of a passing stranger!
Its a nice feeling in return to see a smile in hopes some out there would believe that not all is lost within mankind.
Maybe if we all smiled once in awhile it could make a difference.
I keep hoping anyway...

Well dear, whatever you give is yours forever, so keep on smiling whether they get it or not. Some people are so bogged down in the everyday ho-hum of life that they simply can't register the simple meaning a friendly smile. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who feels this way..... Thanks!! gamerunner2001 is smiling!

I have found most of the time people do smile back. But they may be having a hard day. I know I've been in moods before where I just feel like I hate everyone and someone will smile at me and I'm just not in the mood! But then later I feel bad because they were just trying to be nice. But you know we're just people. Keep smiling, though, even when people don't respond appropriately. They may need the smile, even if they don't show it.

Never stop smiling. It depends on where you are. In Canada, people there smile and greet you as if it was a contest for who-greets-and-smiles-at-more-strangers everyday. In New York, they'll give you a weird look. In the Philippines, its not a common practice to be first but when you do smile, they will smile back. In some countries like some in the middle east, you can get arrested for smiling at another female.... so it depends where you are at. But heck - keep smiling.

I find a smile along with a Hi, usually gets the same response from strangers. I find this a lot when I'm out walking with my dog. Occasionally I get ignored, but for the most part it's positive.

Keep on smiling.

Right on!
Well- I also feel the same- maybe the reason is that these days everybody is so engrossed in their own tensions and fears that they forget to smell the PROVERBIAL ROSES ALONG THE WAY! We tend to forget that the JOURNEY is AS IMPORTANT as the DESTINATION!
But- I would suggest that don't let this dampen your smile...LET IT FLOW...every once in a while- there would be someone who would smile back and that 1 smile would make it all worthwhile.

And if I cross you on the street- I ll recognise you - as you ll be the one with the beautiful beaming smile- and sure- I ll smile back!

When i smile people smile back all the time. Maybe ur smiling at the wrong people. Have u looked at ur smile in the mirror. There are ways to actually improve the way u smile. Smiling is body language and u have to use ur whole body.

They are confused, why you are smiling at them. If they understand you are only wishing them with a smile, they will return. There are ofcourse some people who don't smile at all. And at times those who always smile might be preoccupied at that particular instance and doesn't return the smile.

What you said is true, but I know there are some who acts as if other people owe them millions of bucks, or something which they find annoying, so their face looks so sulky.

Anyway, so what if they don't smile back, maybe they happen to turn away, have something on their mind, don't feel too good, or just plain shy. Whatever it is, don't let it affect you.

Not everyone is "in the moment". They might have a lot of problems on their mind. Perhaps they didn't even realize that you were smiling at THEM! But somewhere in their subconcious, they saw you.

But keep smiling! You probably brightened the person's day even if they didn't smile back.

There are 50 million reasons why people don't smile back ...so if you smile at 2 people and they smile back and the 3rd person you smile at frowns at you ...are you going to stop smiling at people because of the 3rd person, or are you going to keep smiling at people because of the 1st and 2cnd persons?
