I see you like artists and poets more than ham. Good for you!

Here are a couple of artists and albums that did it for me in the day:

Traffic.......John Barleycorn Must Die
Leon Russel..first album
Jimi Hendrix.....Cry for Love
Blind Faith...only album
King Crimson...first album

If you like Fairport then you'll probably like Pentangle and the early Steeleye Span too. ( And don't forget the Sandy Denny solo works/Fotheringay stuff .
And as you mention CSNY and GD etc, then why not the Allman Bros. Band?
If you like the rougher edges of VU then there's Iggy and the Stooges - which leads us nicely onto another boring egotist: David Bowie.
And, obvious perhaps, but true, the Beatles, their albums show a lot more depth than the singles would indicate..

Three Dog Night!! Joplin's band was Big Brother & the Holding Company. Joe Cocker. The Kinks were awesome. You are omitting soul, too! Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, Aretha, James Brown, Gladys Night.

Ooh! Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Joan Baez!

Maybe I'm going back a little earlier than you'd like but:
Beach Boys, Three Dog Night, Tommy James & the Shondells, Dave Clark Five, Herman's Hermits, BoxTops, Grass Roots, Buckinghams, etc.

And I know what you mean about the Beatles...sometimes it just gets old.
