Technically every land mass is an island, the larger ones with national boundries tend to be labeled as continents. I think its because islands are usually small enough to have their own unique ecosystem, and continents are made of many different systems.

Technically, I live on an island (actually a sand pit surrounded by dyke!). But because the island is too small to be seen on a world map, It is considered to be part of the North american continent

I think Australia is a continent because from research I found out that continents came about as a result of a large land mass being broke up into pieces as a result of earthquakes, erosion and other physical and chemical changes. Australia was a piece of that large land mass and today these pieces of land are called continents.

Island but I count all continents to be Islands because they are all surrounded by the sea/ocean. (which is the definition of an island)
