the truth: that he didn't.

Your daughter is curious and that's a good thing. Don't destroy that by giving her demotivating non-answers like "only God knows" etc. Especially when there actually are answers to those questions.

Teach your daughter about evolution.

Insects evolved because flowering plants evolved which gave oportunities for nectar-gathering creatures like insects. This may not be strictly true since the very first insects did not gather nectar, but most modern insects decent from nectar gatherers so it's a reasonable explanation.

So locusts and flies would be there when He wanted to plague the Egyptians with them.

Also, insects pollinate the the beautiful flowers which G-d made, and G-d is a gardener (the Garden of Eden, remember?).

This is a flippant answer. Just tell your daughter that we don't really know, but that insects must be part of G-d's plan.

Ignoring the god creates bit...

Insects serve as food sources for many small vertebrates, that is fish, birds, small tree living mammals and lots of other things.

Insects pollinate many flowering plants, bees, flies (yes flies), butterflies. Most of the flowering plants that people grow for food require insect pollination to form the parts we eat, like fruits and berries and nuts or the seeds we need to grow the next generation of crops.

Insects keep dead plants and animals from piling up, flies, fly larva and ants and beetle larvae and termites are far more efficient than other scavengers just by being far more numerous.

Insects are necessary. They have an important part in this world. They feed other animals, they help dead animals turn back into dirt, etc. Many large animals couldn't survive without insects. Plus, some of them are very pretty, so maybe God created some of them just for us to look at. :-)

It is man that the earth does not need. If insects were removed from the equation. There would be an imbalance in nature. eg. No agents for pollination. Some plants would multiply in numbers. Plants would find it hard to live because the soil would be less aerated. No agents to tranport their seeds. the list is endless.

Remove man and nature will flourish!

Teach her about the food web;
Insects eat plants, birds eat insects, cats eat birds, people eat cats. Maybe not that last bit...

Some insects serve a fairly clear purpose;
Flies eat rotting meat, cleaning up areas that would otherwise become breeding grounds for disease and bacteria.
Dung beetles clean up dung so we don't all drown in poo.
Butterflyies are pretty.
Ladybirds eat afids, which are really bad for roses and fruit trees.
Bees pollinate flowers so they can produce seeds.

Maybe you can tell her that only he knows why he created insects, but that there are good and evil things about it.

Good: Food for other creatures and the reproduction of a lot of flowers (and creation of honey)

Evil: To annoy (or even punish) humans (in case of punishment you can quote the stinging flies plague from exodus).

That God created all things for a purpose, and that we may not know that purpose until we get to heaven. But insects eat plants, and there's plenty of that around, - and they're used as 'food' by bigger critters!!

Tell her that God only tells you things that are easy to explain and that when you asked God about insects He told you that it was probably too difficult for you to understand.
