3 seconds or less if there are 30 routers in the path and there is an average congestion in the network. even if its the farthest route but functioning properly.
these are electrons travelling at 30% the speed of light because wiring resistance resulting in energy loss.

normally a matter of seconds, assuming the netwoirk is working OK. However if there is a problem with part of the network they can get clogged and take a lot longer. the network depends on certain key computers being able to resolve (decode) the addresses and forward onto the next computer in the chain. If that computer is damaged or unavailable then the email will tend to wait in a queue untill it can either deliver the message to the next computer, or return it the sender as undeliverable.

The actual transit time is just a couple of seconds. However, if any of the mail servers along the route (always at least 2) are overloaded, it may be delayed for several hours. When I send mail to or from my Yahoo or Hotmail accounts, delivery ranges from about 10 minutes to 5 or 6 hours.

That depends on how fast of a connection to the internet you have, and whether you're using Yahoo's slowazz e-mail. It's possible for it to take less than a second, but it can take as long as 3 or 4 hours, if you're using online e-mail.
