I'm from Toronto in Canada and from what I can understand about the government's recent move to ban smoking in almost every conceivable place aside from an approximate 100 feet from any door, a vehicle or on your own property. If the move was to lessen the effect of second hand smoking or to reduce the toxins released into the air produced by smoking why not prohibit smoking all together? Of course the most obvious answer lies in the connection with the bureaucracy and the government as well as tobacco lobbyists. In my opinion if cigarette smoking is banned in public places for the promotion of better air quality as well as it's related health benefits then I would pursue a move to completely prohibit tobacco as opposed to merely reducing smokers to a small and isolated group. Although people may criticize my position I will tell you that I am currently trying to quit smoking and it is very difficult during break times between lectures coupled with the fact that many of my friends smoke so of course that is why I would adopt such a position.

As long as there is ventilation I don't see why not and I think there should be smoking and non-smoking pubs. It's ridiculous to expect smokers to enjoy a drink without a cigarette, if you don't like smoking you could then go to a non-smoking pub.
People go on about the health risks as though smoking is the only thing that's bad for us. In fact, they cannot prove how many people have actually died from passive smoking. There are other things that are harmful such as pollution and obesity and chemicals in our food, but smoking is always singled out as the worst culprit. How come people are living longer than ever before and most of the people that are old now came from the generation where nearly everyone smoked?
Banning smoking is just another example of the 'Nanny State' style of government control, designed to stop us enjoying ourselves. If they had their way we wouldn't be allowed to do anything and that's just the way they want it. You only live once, that's what I say and if you want to enjoy a cigarette then why not.

I do not believe that cigarette smoking in a public place harms you near as much as breathing the contaminated air you breathe each day. When governments fill the air with chemicals that do not belong there such as D.U. and plutonium how can cigarette smoke even compete? That does not even account the pollution that most automobiles place in the air each day. To me debating smoking in public places is swallowing an elephant and gagging on a Nat.

I'm a nonsmoker, but knowing only urban life I see outdoor cigarette smoke as no worse than car emissions... in fact, cigarette smoke is a lot better for you. It's probably even better for you than charcoal smoke from people grilling.

So it should be banned anywhere car emissions and grills are banned. I would rather err on the side of an individual's freedom than try to create a totalitarian state that tells people what they can and cannot do to themselves. Personally, I think cigarette smoke is disgusting, but I find that most smokers are understanding when you ask them to put it out... yet somehow the world is full of spineless whiners who don't even ask them to put it out, they just want to pee their pants and call their alderman because somebody else's air is invading their air. My policy is that if YOU have a problem with it, YOU should move. This policy of "I don't like what you do, so you should go away" will be horribly abused in a few years.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for banning smoking in public buildings and large offices... but bars? F*ck you *****-as$ yuppies, you shouldn't go to a bar if you're going to complain about the atmosphere. A BAR IS NOT A PUBLIC PLACE ANYWAY, IT IS A PRIVATE BUSINESS. Hell, I don't go to your crappy yuppie bars... why do you have to mess with my manly bars? If I had a bar, it would be the yuppie I would kick out before the smoker, because the smoker is there to enjoy him/herself and will likely come back if they have a good time. The yuppie gonna have one mojito and take up a stool for longer than their business is worth to me.

Smoking bans should be optional and we should allow the free market to decide.... if there is significant demand for nonsmoking bars, people will open nonsmoking bars. But I think you know that won't happen, because there really aren't enough yuppies to warrant that... you're just another whiny minority that is getting its way with municipalities everywhere who are trying to be "trendy" and "progressive." I, for one, see nothing progressive about taking rights away from people.

and then in a few years time we can ban the drinking of fizzy drinks and eating food in public, and then walking on footpaths, and then in about 50 years time we ration the air that we breathe, and we'll only be able to breathe Government issue air. God, we are becoming a sad sorry country - if someone wants to smoke, let them. In time the social stigma that is being attached to smoking will kill it off anyway. I'd be more interested in targeting smokers who litter the roads and streets with butts. But beware - this country gets a hefty Tax income from the tobacco industry - ban smoking in public places, smoking will decrease and the shortfall in taxes has got to come from somewhere....

Cigarette smoking is a very stupid thing to do, but if one doesn't mind the health risks or don't mind smelling like that that's their business. They should not smoke in places where other people are present. As for smoking around ones children, it should be considered what it is, child abuse.

I am not a smoker, but do think we carry the smoking ban too far sometimes.
I think it should be banned where food is served or being eaten and there should be separate rooms in pubs ( the bar area should be a no smoking zone to protect staff) .It should be banned in areas where other people have no choice about being there. But outside where other people can easily avoid them if they want to I say lets give them a break..

It is their choice.. ( however don't get me started on the cost of health care for persistent smokers!!!)

cigarette smoking in public places...the smoke spreads through the air and people receive unwanted second-hand smoke. It is infringing on others' rights. But I guess designated smoking areas should be allowed.

I am a smoker although i try not to be!!!
I am glad they are bringing in the smoking ban, even though i am a smoker i hate sitting in other peoples smoke! I hate coming out of a bar and smelling of smoke and there is nothing worse than waking up after a night out and your hair and clothes reeking of smoke.....Yuck!!!
I was in Scotland the week after the smoking ban was introduced at my sisters wedding and although it was bloody freezing out i and all the other smokers were happy enough to be outside! in fact there was more craic outside with all the smokers and the majority of the wedding party, ended up with us!!
I'm looking forward to the ban as maybe then i will loose the interest and not be assed with having to go outside..........Nicotine patches here i come!!
